[Easy English Blog]Sleep

Recently, I have seen newspapers articles about sleep. They say that many people are sleep-deprived. (This means people don’t sleep enough.) The newspaper articles say that we should sleep 7-9 hours every night.

How many hours a night do you sleep? I try to sleep 8 hours a night. If I sleep less than that, I feel sleepy during the day. Sometimes, if I’m busy at work, I sleep less, but even then, I usually sleep for 7 hours.

Most nights, it is easy for me to fall asleep. I read for about half an hour, and then I start to feel sleepy. Sometimes though, if I am reading a good book, I don’t want to stop!

If I have trouble falling asleep, I burn lavender aroma oil. The scent of lavendar is relaxing, and I soon fall asleep.

Some people say that sleeping for 8 hours every night is too much. Someone once told me I was lazy. But I don’t agree. I am much more productive during the day if I sleep well for 8 hours every night.

[Easy English Blog] Running longer distances

When I go for a run, I usually run around 10 or 11km. I have been running this distance for a few years. This year, I have decided to increase the distance I can run.

Last week, I ran 15km. It took me an hour and a half. Surprisingly, I didn’t feel so tired when I stopped. I could have run a few more kilometres, but it was getting late, and I had reached my target, so I stopped.

I hope to run 20km some time this month. Over the year, I want to increase the distance I run. I’m not so concerned about my running time. I just want to enjoy running. Maybe in the future I will enter a half marathon, or a full marathon, and think about my time. At the moment, I’m just happy to get outside and do some exercise in the fresh air.

[Easy English Blog] A present

DSC07917

I received a present from a friend the other day. It is an ornament of a boar. 2019 is the Year of the Boar or Year of the Pig according to the twelve animals of the zodiac. The boar ornament I received has an aroma bag inside. I’m not sure what the scent is, but it smells like incense. I like the smell. It makes my room feel calm and peaceful.

Last year, my friend sent me an ornament of a dog, because it was the Year of the Dog. That ornament also had a nice aroma. I don’t want to throw it away, so I keep it in a box in my closet. If my friend buys me one every year, maybe I will have a large collection of ornaments in my closet!

[Easy English Blog]Tax season

It’s tax season again. I have to complete my tax return before the middle of March. I complete my tax return every year, but it is still difficult for me. I am not very good with numbers. Some of the calculations are difficult for me. This year, I am going to start early. I want to start completing the forms in the next few days, so I can do it slowly and carefully.

For the first few years, I asked a friend to help me, but then I realised I must learn to do it by myself. I can’t keep relying on my friend. It is my responsibility. I could ask a tax accountant to do it for me, but I think that is expensive. It doesn’t cost me anything to do it by myself. Well, it doesn’t cost me any money, but it takes time.

When I complete my tax return, I drink a lot of coffee. It keeps me alert. I need to be alert to do the calculations! I’m glad that I only have to do it once a year!

[Easy English Blog]Studying Chinese

DSC07916

I have decided to take the HSK Level 3 Chinese test this year. Level 3 is intermediate level. I have been studying Chinese for a few years, but I haven’t studied hard. I think this is because I didn’t have a goal.

Now that I have a goal – the test, I am studying every day. I use a textbook my Chinese teacher gave me, a vocabulary book, and the official textbook for the test. I am using Japanese textbooks. So I am studying Chinese through Japanese. I also listen to a Chinese CD in my car. I don’t understand it all, but I can pick out words. The more I study, the more words I can recognise. I also watch videos on YouTube. There are a lot of language learning videos on that site.

I want to take the test in September. I will study every day until then so that I am ready. I want to pass, but if I don’t, I’ll just study harder and take it again. If I pass, I will study for level 4 next year. My goal is to get the highest level – level 6.

While I am studying, I would like to go to China to practice my Chinese. I have been once before, but that was a long time ago. I couldn’t speak any Chinese then. I hope I can go sometime in the next few years.

[Easy English Blog]Travel

How often do you travel? I don’t travel very often. I go home every Christmas, and spend a few nights in a European city, but that’s about it. I travel within Japan maybe once or twice a year.

Every year, I say that I will travel within Japan more, but the weeks and months pass by so quickly! It gets to the end of the year and I realise I haven’t left the prefecture all year! Last year, I went to Tokyo, Okayama and Hiroshima. The year before, I didn’t leave the prefecture at all.

This year, I hope to go to an event in Kobe. I also want to drive down to Hiroshima to go shopping and to enjoy a day in a big city! It takes about two and a half hours to drive there from my home. It is not so far, but finding the time to go is difficult for me. I usually work every day. But maybe I will take a day off in spring and enjoy a road trip down to Hiroshima. It’s good to travel and see new things and meet new people.

Next year, my friend and I are planning to visit Russia. That means I will have two trips abroad next year. I can’t wait!

[Easy English Blog]Supplements

Do you take any supplements? I take iron supplements and a multi-vitamin supplement once a day. Some people say there are no benefits to taking supplements. Others say they are good for your health.

I’m not sure if they are good or not. However, I think the iron supplement is good for me. I feel a lot better when I take it. When I don’t take it, I get tired very quickly and have little energy. I have low iron levels in my blood, so a doctor recommended I take an iron supplement.

The multi-vitamin I take contains eleven kinds of vitamins. Is this supplement good for me? Or is it a waste of money? I’m not sure, but I take it anyway. It contains a lot of vitamin D. I don’t think I get enough vitamin D because I spend a lot of my time inside, and the area where I live is often dark and gloomy, especially in winter.

There are many kinds of health products available these days. I prefer to eat well and get nutrients from food, but this isn’t always possible. Also, there are some kinds of food which I don’t eat. I’ll continue taking my supplements, even though I’m not completely convinced that they are effective!

[Easy English Blog]Vegetable steamer

I bought a new vegetable steamer the other day. My old one broke. I love steamed vegetables, so I bought a new one. I’m not sure if this one is broken or not though.

When I switched it on, it kept switching itself off, the restarting, then switching off, then restarting… Eventually it stopped switching itself off and stayed on. I’m going to use it again tonight to see if the same thing happens. If it does, I’m going to send it back to the shop and ask them to send me a new one.

I like to steam potatoes, sweet potatoes, carrots, broccoli, onion, green peppers, mushrooms and tofu. I eat the vegetables with salt and olive oil, and the tofu with salt and grated sesame. It is simple and easy to make. Most of all, it doesn’t take much time. I just put the ingredients in the steamer and let the steamer do the cooking for me.

I hope it works OK tonight. I’m looking forward to a healthy dinner.

[Easy English Blog]Secret dog

I want a dog. My family have always had dogs. When I lived in the UK, I loved taking the dogs for walks, and playing with them. For me, dogs are part of the family.

I have lived in many different apartments and houses in Japan. None of the apartments have allowed dogs. So I have never been able to keep one.

The apartment I live in now doesn’t allow dogs, but one man keeps a dog. He has a secret dog. When he goes out of the apartment, he puts the dog under his coat, so no one can see it. The dog is small, so it fits under his coat easily. Then, when he is about 100 metres from the apartment, he puts the dog on the ground and takes it for a walk. I have seen him do this a few times.

Once, I stopped the man and asked him, “Do you keep this dog in the apartment?” He said, “Yes”. The dog is really cute and seems happy. I never hear it bark in the apartment and it never causes me trouble. But I wonder, “Has the apartment manager seen the man with the dog?” “Will other people complain?” “Is it OK to keep a dog even though we are not allowed to keep pets?”

I am sure other people in the apartment have seen the man with his secret dog. I wonder, “How long can he keep his secret?”

[Easy English Blog] Energy in autumn and winter

christmas home house light

When do you have the most energy? I have the most energy in autumn and winter. Many people feel their energy increases in spring. The long, cold winter is over, and everything feels new and fresh. I don’t feel like this in spring. I feel sleepy. The weather is getting warmer and summer is coming. I don’t like summer very much because I don’t like hot weather. It is humid where I live, so I have less energy and I want to sleep.

I think I feel energetic and motivated in autumn because the school year starts in autumn in the UK. In autumn, I remember starting school after the long summer holiday. For me, autumn is a time for a new start. I also feel this way in winter. The new year starts in January. This is a time when people make goals for the year. I make goals for the year and feel motivated. I like to get up early in winter and work next to the heater while it is dark outside. For some reason, I work better like this.

In Japan, the school year starts in April, so many people feel motivated in spring. I am always very busy in March, so by the time April comes, I feel like I need a rest!

How about you? When do you have the most energy?
