[Easy English Blog] Sunday Stroll

How often do you stroll around your neighbourhood or town? I rarely do. I tend to drive these days, although I’ve been making an effort to walk more lately. It’s the perfect season for doing so. On Sunday afternoon, I went to a small celebration. I drank champagne at the party, so of course, I left the car at home. two-glasses-of-champagne

It was a nice day, so instead of getting a taxi, I walked there and back. It took around an hour each way. I stopped at a few places on the way and took pictures. It’s surprising how little we notice when we drive everywhere. I found lots of nice corners I had never noticed before. Corners like this – autumn leaves in spring!

The wind socks in the photo are called “koinobori” and they are displayed to celebrate Children’s Day. Children’s Day is 5th May, but there were still some carp flying in the wind on Sunday! For more information about Children’s Day, see here, and for more information on koinobori, see here! And here is a shot of the wide spring sky and a traditional house.

[Easy English Blog] Cherry blossom season

It’s cherry blossom season in Japan. It’s a beautiful time of year to spend outdoors – the air is fresh with the scent of new flowers, and the breeze is warm and gentle.

Many people have “hanami” (cherry blossom viewing) parties in parks or along riverbanks where the cherries bloom.

DSC05972

It rained quite heavily the other day, so there were not many people out enjoying hanami. But the cherry blossoms are beautiful in the rain too. The sound of the rain drops gently dripping from the petals is so peaceful.

Here are some pictures I took over the past few days. The blossoms are not in full bloom yet, but they still make a nice photograph. 🙂

[Easy English Blog] Plum blossoms

The plum blossoms are in bloom now. They look and smell lovely. I especially like the deep pink blossoms. They add a touch of early spring colour to a snowy landscape. Unfortunately, there wasn’t any snow left when I took these photographs, but they still look nice!

Many plum blossoms bloom in the grounds of Tenjin shrines. Tenjin shrines are dedicated to the deity Sugawara no Michizane, who is  the god of learning. The plum blossoms bloom around exam time in Japan, when students are visiting the shrine to pray for luck in their exams. It is said that Sugawara no Michizane loved plum blossoms, so many of the shrines dedicated to him have plum trees.

The plum blossoms also remind us that, very soon, the cherry blossoms will be in bloom, and spring will be here.

[Easy English Blog] A Haiku for Winter

We had our first snowfall the other day. I went out early, before the town awoke, and took some photographs. The morning after a night of heavy snowfall is very peaceful. The town is quiet, and the air is crisp and fresh.

Winter, like the other seasons, inspired the famous haiku master, Matsuo Basho, to create haiku. Here is one of his most famous winter haiku (translated by R. Hass).

[Easy English Blog] New Year, New Skills

woman-studying-cartoon

When a new year starts, many people decide to learn new skills. Others try to improve skills they already have, such as improving their English ability.

How about you? Have you decided to learn any new skills this year?

A good way to learn something new and improve your English ability at the same time, is to learn something new through English.

Nowadays, we can learn many things on the Internet for free. For example, the website Coursera* offers free university courses in many languages. You can study the courses in English, or maybe in your own language.

Here is the link to the site: Coursera

(*We don’t have any connection to Coursera. We just enjoy taking their courses!)

We found an interesting post about learning new skills in the new year. In this post, the writer lists 24 skills you can learn in English for free. Some examples are learning a new language, improving your public speaking skills, and learning about basic psychology.

[Easy English Blog] Time Flies

DSC05697

Recently, I have been hearing these phrases a lot.  “Time flies!” “It’s already December!” “It’s nearly the end of the year!” “Where has the year gone?!” People are starting to plan and attend bonenkai (bonenkai 忘年会 = end-of-year party in Japanese).

DSC05680

Every year, it seems like time passes by faster than the year before. Many people here say that spring and autumn are getting shorter, and summer and winter are getting longer every year. I think they are right. I felt that time in August passed by very slowly. August, and it’s heat and humidity, seemed to last forever!

DSC05691

Then, in early October, when it started to get cooler, time started to fly by. (fly by=pass by very quickly) And now that it is starting to get colder, I think time will start to slow down again.

DSC05705

I went for a walk to enjoy the last of the autumn leaves this morning. I hope you enjoy the photographs. It won’t be long before these trees are bare, and the branches heavy with snow…

[Easy English Blog] Autumn Colours

DSC05633

Autumn is my favourite season, so I like to go autumn leaf viewing. Unfortunately, I haven’t been able to go autumn leaf viewing so much this year. I had a bad cold for a few weeks, then I had a busy few weeks, then it rained a lot and…now autumn is nearly over. (*to be over = to be finished)

DSC05628

I had some time today, and the weather was quite nice, so I went for a walk and took some photos. My last chance before winter comes…
