I have been thinking about “food miles”.
When I was a child, it was not always possible to buy bananas and oranges. We don’t grow them in my country, so we had to wait until some more arrived from another country. These days we can always buy them. We can buy anything we want in the supermarket. But some people worry about food miles.
The idea is that a lot of energy is used to move food from one part of the world to another. When we buy and eat this food, we should think about the energy that has been used in transport.
Today I bought some asparagus. I love asparagus, and I didn’t have to worry about food miles, because it is asparagus season here. This means the asparagus has come from local farms, and it is very cheap in the supermarket.
I’m going to steam it and eat it with lemon juice and butter.
